Five new books to check out in October
Nazi-fighters, Prohibition firebrands, tabloids, absinthe, and Hitchcock
As a tabloid-history buff I’m especially interested in the first selection on this month’s list, which I plan on adding to my pile. The Hitchcock book looks cool, but I just tore through HITCHCOCK’S BLONDES so maybe that’s enough Hitchcock for me? Also, if the Damien Lewis title catches your eye be sure to check out our SOURCE NOTES interview from last year.
From the publisher: “Vivid and racy, a deep-dive into tabloids from their sixteenth-century beginnings to the National Inquirer and beyond. THE NEWSMONGERS unfolds the seedy history of tabloid journalism.” The Economist: “A largely enjoyable and enlightening story—for journalists, of course, but also for anyone who wants to understand better the intricate relationship between newspapers and their rapt readers.” (Reaktion Books, October 7)
From the publisher: “An astonishing true crime story about an eccentric grifter who blew up the lucrative black market for vintage bottles of the legendary drink of artistic renegades.” Kirkus Reviews: “A multilayered account of absinthe’s return to mainstream society. … An entertaining survey of spirits culture past and present.” (Melville House, October 15)
From the publisher: “With riveting combat writing and masterful research, award-winning historian and #1 internationally bestselling author Damien Lewis delivers the remarkable true story of Britain’s infamous Special Air Service (SAS) forces, their legendary commander, and the impossibly daring, historic mission to liberate Europe via the largest invasion fleet ever assembled.” (Citadel, October 22)
From the publisher: “Organized chronologically and covering every short film, television episode, and classic film that the ‘Master of Suspense’ directed over the course of his illustrious, 60-year career, ALFRED HITCHCOCK ALL THE FILMS draws upon years of research to tell the behind the scenes stories of how each project was conceived, cast, and produced, down to the creation of the costumes, the search for perfect locations, and of course, the direction of some of cinema's most memorable scenes.” Library Journal: “Each Hitchcock project is covered with enough details to delight existing fans and entice new ones.” (Black Dog & Leventhal, October 29)
From the publisher: “Guaranteed to change how you picture Prohibition, this lively history turns the spotlight on four women in the immediate aftermath of winning the vote who played influential roles on all sides of the Eighteenth and Twenty-First Amendments.” (University of Chicago Press, October 30)
